When I...by Carson Ratzlaff

Carson is full of stories. Many of them start off with the words, "when I" and then ends with some sort of general nonsense. Funny 3 year old nonsense, and since he is mine I think it is often hilarious. Sometimes he tells us things he is going to do when he "turns into" 6, or how after he turns into 6 he is going to turn back into 2. Are you tracking that he has no clue about age here? Since Davis started Kindergarten there has been a lot of "when I go to Kindergarten" stories, and I do believe that today's might be the funniest yet.

Yesterday Davis had library day at school. They have no guidance of the type of book they bring home, they get to pick. Davis brought home a Jewish classic called "Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins". Now, I am sure this post will cause this book to go flying off the shelves, but this story has nothing to do with the content of the book. As a matter of fact, we have not read the book and I am a bit fearful of the dragon illustrations, but again not the point either.

When Davis got home Thursday I asked him what he got at the library, and he grinned really big and said, " a Jewish one". We are a home very open to any faith and have friends with a lot of faith backgrounds, but I could not think of a time that we have talked about Judaism with Davis so I said, what is it about and how do you know it is a Jewish book? He then says because it had the star on the front. OK...the Star of David. I understand that, but how he knew that I did not know. Then he got the book out and the boys began fighting over the book and Davis tells Carson that he is not Jewish so he can't read the book. Um..OK..is this where I explain that Davis is not Jewish either or just let that go...well, I let that go. The book war became ugly so the book went to time out and I thought the topic was over.

Then, this morning on the way to school Davis is daydreaming about his field trip and not about the trip itself, but that he "gets to ride a school bus". Carson is telling everything goodnight, like the book goodnight moon we read the night before...good night school bus, good night stop sign...you get the picture. We drop Davis off and all is well, we leave and then Carson says to me you know when I get to go to Kindergarten I am going to be Jewish and get a Jewish book too.

A few other funny quotes from the day that have nothing to do with our current library book is a box that we got from Monga today. Monga knows how to spoil my boys. She knows I have little time for shopping and always helps keep them dressed. Today they got a box with winter coats in them she had found last year at the end of season. Cute coats--puffy coats. They are blue and yellow. I pull them out and I show Carson. I said look this is for you, he says WOW, I really like it. I am impressed with his comment. Then he says, but what do I do with it? Then a bit later he goes downstairs and tells Davis that Monga sent them pirate costumes. I am not sure if he thought his winter coat was a pirate costume or if he was just telling his brother stories...
